Sitting in front of a beached whale and painting it felt strange. I couldn’t help but feel guilty that I was turning this poor animal into a sort of spectacle. But people were already gathering around it to take photos and to try to understand the scale of it. Painting felt like my way of witnessing this large animal I might never get the opportunity to be so close to ever again.
